A former Tesla engineer and lifelong athlete who discovered strength training after an injury, Miranda became increasingly interested in strength not just as a workout goal, but as something that can impact mobility, independence, and quality of life as we age.
At just 27, Miranda set out to build Fort, a new health wearable designed to track the way people actually move. She’s building it with someone who knows her workout routine pretty well: Co-Founder and fiancé, Zac, whom she fittingly met at a squat rack.
We caught up with Miranda to talk about starting a company in her 20s, why fitness progress doesn’t have to be linear, what our workout data is—and isn’t—telling us
What inspired you to build Fort, and what gap did you see in the fitness wearable market?
I’ve been active for most of my life. I ran my first half marathon at 12 and grew up as a competitive runner, but an ankle injury eventually forced me to explore other forms of fitness. I began strength training as rehabilitation and discovered that I loved the process and the confidence that came from becoming stronger. At the same time, I was watching members of my family grow older and struggle with falls and declining mobility. It made me realize that strength is about far more than athletic performance or appearance. Strength affects our independence, resilience, and quality of life as we age. I kept wondering how different their experiences might have been if strength training had been more accessible, measurable, and habitual earlier in life.
You started Fort at 27. Did you always know you wanted to be a founder?
