AI-powered attacks are not rewriting the attacker's playbook. They are putting it on fast-forward. Adversaries now use AI to discover credentials, enumerate accounts and groups, map permission relationships, and identify the shortest viable path to privilege, continuously and at machine speed. Techniques that once required hours of manual reconnaissance across Active Directory and cloud identity providers now execute in minutes, adapting in real time as the environment responds.
That speed changes what “privileged access” has to mean. Traditional PAM was built around a defined set of administrator accounts, vaulted credentials, periodic access reviews, and scheduled rotation. But the identities that actually carry an attack forward are frequently the ones outside that perimeter: Tier 1 administrators, service accounts, machine identities, and non-human identities that no one owns and no one rotates. Shadow administrative rights and nested permission relationships create indirect paths from low-value resources straight to Tier 0.
The harder problem is that a compromised credential is a valid credential. When an attacker authenticates legitimately, controls tuned to detect malicious behavior have very little to detect. Reducing standing privilege, vaulting, and rotating credentials all lower risk, but they operate at admin time. They cannot intervene in an attack that is unfolding right now.
