Dear Carolyn: The last year and a half have completely flipped our lives upside down. My husband was in a really serious accident, and because of his injuries, he can’t do the physically demanding job he used to have. The reality is he may never be able to work again. He’s still doing all kinds of therapy and rehab.
We ended up selling our house in a city we absolutely loved and moved to a small town closer to his parents. The move made sense — the house is much better suited to his needs, and his parents have been incredibly supportive. Our two young kids are thriving here, which I’m grateful for. I work full-time at my same job remotely, which is a total blessing.
I have no friends here. I don’t like small-town life in general; I’m a city girl. Who am I here? What is this life I have now? I try to start each day counting blessings, but I’m kind of over that. I feel adrift and don’t know how to find myself. The thought of therapy — one more thing on my list — overwhelms me. How do I start to get to a better season of life?
