hey so you know how sometimes a plan just kind of falls into place without you really trying that hard and then you look back and realize it all made sense in a way you could not have predicted at the start that happened to me this past weekend with the garden beds I had been putting off the whole spring rotation and honestly I was convinced the soil was too compacted for anything to actually take root this season
so I grabbed a trowel and started loosening the top layer by hand which took way longer than I expected maybe forty minutes of just working the crust over and pulling up old root clusters from the plants that did not survive the frost last year and once I got down about six inches the texture completely changed it was darker and crumbly and full of worm activity which is a really good sign I think
anyway I ended up planting three rows of bush beans and a couple of cucumber starts along the back edge where the fence gives them some late afternoon shade and now every morning I go out with a cup of coffee just to see if anything has pushed through the surface yet nothing so far but the moisture level seems right and the weather has been mild enough that I am not stressing about it too much yet
the neighbor came by and asked if I was putting in a full kitchen garden this year and I said maybe just the basics for now so I do not overcommit and end up with more produce than I can actually use or give away like the tomato explosion from two summers ago which we are still talking about apparently

okay so you asked about the hike and I keep meaning to write back with the full rundown but every time I sit down to reply something else pops up and now it is friday afternoon and I realize I have left you hanging for three days which is not great of me
the trail itself was in good shape for this time of year a little muddy in the lower switchbacks but the upper ridge was dry and the views were completely clear all the way to the second peak which almost never happens when you actually plan a day off for it we did not see too many other people either just a couple of trail runners and one guy with a very enthusiastic dog that kept bringing him sticks
I forgot my good socks so I ended up with a blister on my left heel by mile four but I taped it up with some stuff from the first aid kit and powered through the last stretch the soreness the next day was completely worth it honestly there is a section right at the top where the trees open up and you can see the whole valley laid out like a map and I sat there for maybe twenty minutes just taking it in
next time we should do the full loop instead of the out and back and maybe pack an actual lunch instead of gas station trail mix because by the end I was running on fumes and a single granola bar I found at the bottom of my bag which I am pretty sure was from last fall
