Certification costs scare more first-time product creators than almost anything else in hardware.

The numbers sound big and the process sounds like a black box.

So most people make one of two timeline mistakes.

They either ignore certifications until a failed test forces the issue, or they panic about the cost so early that they freeze.

Both mistakes come from the same mix-up.

People treat designing for certifications and paying for certifications as a single step, but they're two separate steps that happen far apart.

Designing for certifications happens early.

Once you know which certifications apply to your product, you let that knowledge shape decisions while they're still free to change.

That means things like laying out your PCB with EMI in mind from the start, choosing a pre-certified wireless module instead of a chip-down radio design, and going with an off-the-shelf power supply that already carries its own certifications.

This early stage is where certification failures get prevented for very little cost.

One member inside my Hardware Academy brought his board in for review before fab, and an expert flagged a shortage of stitching vias, a fix that improved the board's odds of passing FCC.

The next checkpoint comes later, once you have a working prototype. A low-cost pre-compliance scan at a test lab tells you where you stand before any real money is on the line.

And the process itself is less official than most people think.

For most products, certifications like FCC and CE are self-declared, meaning you run the tests, keep the paperwork on file, and never submit anything to a government agency.

Don't pay for certifications before your crowdfunding campaign or pre-sales.

You can legally take pre-orders and run a full campaign before certifying. You just can't ship until the certifications are done.

And don't certify right after the campaign closes either.

Wait until pilot production is set up and your design has stopped moving.

The reason is that production setup almost always forces small design changes, and certifying a design that's still changing means paying for testing twice.

So the money your customers give you funds your certifications and your first inventory run.

You never front those costs yourself, and because you designed for certifications from day one, you pass the first time.
