Centreville Students, Families, and Community,
Last week was a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting one another, particularly during challenging times. As we paused to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, we were also impacted by tragic events within our own community. Moments like these remind us of the importance of the relationships we foster, remaining aware of the needs of those around us, and finding opportunities to offer care and support. They also remind us of the strength and resilience of a community that comes together when it matters most. I want to thank the entire Wildcat Nation for the many ways you continue to care for our students and for one another.
This week provides several opportunities for us to come together in positive ways. On Thursday at 6:00 p.m., we will host our first PTSA meeting of the school year in the Centreville High School Library. We are also pleased to welcome School Board members Sandy Anderson and Seema Dixit to join our conversation. The partnership between our students, staff, families, and broader community is vital to our success, and I hope to see many familiar faces, and plenty of new ones, as we continue strengthening that partnership.
Then, on Friday night, we will welcome the Wildcat community for our first home football game of the season! Friday nights are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our students, showcase our school spirit, and bring our community together. As we begin the home season, there are several new safety and security measures being implemented across the division. All patrons will go through weapons detection screening, and a clear bag policy will be in effect. Centreville students will need to present a student ID, and elementary and middle school students from our feeder schools must remain accompanied by an adult. Please review the News from Student Activities section below for additional details, and look for further communication later this week.
Finally, next Sunday, September 20, is the Asha-Jyothi (AJ) Foundation’s 18th Annual 5K Run/Walk. Every registration connected to Centreville High School will be donated directly back to our school, making this a fun and meaningful way to spend time together while supporting the Wildcat Nation. If you are participating, be sure to come decked out in your finest Wildcat gear! I look forward to seeing our community well represented and hope you will join us.
Whether it is supporting one another through difficult moments or gathering together to celebrate, connect, and give back, the strength of Centreville has always been our community. Thank you for continuing to make the Wildcat Nation a place where we look out for one another and move forward together.

The goal is to show that we are all included in this one community of Centreville High School. So rock your Centreville gear to show your support, school spirit, and pride in being a Wildcat!
September 17 - PTSA Meeting: Please join us for the monthly PTSA meeting on Thursday, September 17 at 6:00PM in the Centreville High School Library. School Board members Sandy Anderson and Seema Dixit will join our meeting. We invite you to join the Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) to help foster a positive and inclusive school climate. Your involvement in PTSA is an opportunity to strengthen relationships and make a lasting impact on our school community. September 19 - Music Tag Day: Tag Day is the music department’s biggest fundraiser each year. Groups of students with a parent chaperone go door to door, asking for monetary donations in support of the Band, Choir and Orchestra programs. The funds raised provide sectional instruction, the purchase of equipment and music and more. Thank you in advance for supporting our performing arts programs!
September 20 - Asha-Jyothi 5K Run Centreville High School Fundraiser: We are excited to invite the Centreville community to participate in the 18th Annual Asha-Jyothi Foundation 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, September 20, 2026, in Fairfax. This healthy and fun event brings together students, families, teachers, and community members while also providing an opportunity to generate meaningful funding for our school. When registering, participants should select Centreville High School as their school. Asha-Jyothi will return 100% of registration proceeds associated with our school, along with an additional participation incentive:
- 25+ registrations: $500
- 50+ registrations: $1,000
- 100+ registrations: $2,000
- 250+ registrations: $10,000
This funding can support student programs, classroom resources, technology, STEM activities, and other needs that directly benefit our students. Participants can also use the code AJ4SCHOOLS to receive $10 off the 5K registration. The discount applies to the 5K only; however, Centreville will still receive 100% of the registration amount when participants select our school for the Fun Run. Please consider registering and encouraging your colleagues, students, and families to join the Wildcat team!
September 22 - Common App Boot Camp: Seniors! If you would like to get assistance with your college applications, please attend the Common App Boot Camp on Tuesday, September 22 during ROAR (9:45-10:30am) in the library. Counselors will be on hand with Mrs. Stamper to answer your questions! September 28 - October 1 - 9th Grade Wellness Screener: On September 28 - October 1 groups of 9th grade students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. We are using a program called Signs of Suicide (SOS). The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening form. This form cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should seek help from a mental health professional. If you do NOT wish your child to participate in this program and/or screener, please contact Kristin Girardin, Director of Student Services. The bell schedule will be flipped on 9/30 and 10/1 to allow counselors and clinicians to meet with any students needing follow up prior to the end of the day.. The period rotation will be 7, 3, 5 & 1 and then 8, 4, 6 & 2. Academy students will follow their regular schedule and report to the library for the last block of the day.
October 2 - Choir Mic Night: CVHS Mic Night will take place in the auditorium on Friday, October 2 at 7pm! This event is put on by the Choral Department and the Choral Boosters. Students enrolled in any Performing Arts class (Choir, Band, Orchestra, Theatre, & Guitar) are eligible to audition to perform. Students choose their own song/piece and can perform solos, duets, trios, or in small groups. Come on out to enjoy a varied lineup of performances! Admission is $5. Our student performing artists truly appreciate your support!
October 7 - PSAT/SAT School Day: On October 7, our 10th and 11th grade students will take the PSAT. Additionally, we will be administering the SAT for any 12th grade students who signed up for this optional test date. Our 9th grade students and any seniors who did not register should not attend school on this day. We will operate on an early release schedule, so all students will be dismissed at 12:55PM, unless they qualify for extended time on these tests.
Active Learning in Geometry Classes: At Centreville, we prioritize ensuring every student is deeply engaged in higher-level thinking and meaningful collaboration, and this was evident in Ms. Ailsworth’s and Mr. Wilding’s Geometry classes last week. Because we believe that when students are doing the thinking, they are doing the learning, it was inspiring to see our Wildcats actively problem-solving and leading their own learning together last week. Kudos to these students and teachers for exemplifying the collaborative, thinking-focused culture that makes CVHS thrive!

AI Powered Learning in German: Innovation was on full display in Mr. Uden’s German class last week! Mr. Uden leveraged artificial intelligence to build simulated conversational scenarios, giving students a unique platform to sharpen their listening and speaking skills. This interactive tool allowed Wildcats to practice live, real-time conversations and immediately apply their language skills in an authentic setting. Kudos to Mr. Uden and his students for embracing creative technology to take language learning to the next level!

SAT School Day and PSAT/NMSQT Testing Day: SAT School Day and PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) exams will be held at each high school on Wednesday, October 7, at no cost to families. The digital SAT School Day exam is offered to 12th grade students, and the digital PSAT/NMSQT exam is provided to 10th and 11th grade students.

Unscheduled Day for 9th Grade Students: Because of the testing, most 9th grade students will not have school on October 7. Students are encouraged to complete any missing work or assignments that need to be completed prior to the end of the first quarter. Ninth grade students with disabilities who receive low incidence special education services will still receive in-person instruction with a two-hour early release on October 7. Save the Date: Community Conversations with Superintendent Reid: Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life. A series of Community Conversations will be held across the school division. You are invited to share your thoughts with Dr. Reid and ask her questions. Events are planned for the following dates at 6:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted):

Reporting Discrimination or Harassment: FCPS is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for people of all races, national origins, and ethnicities. Individuals experiencing harassment or discrimination should report the incident as soon as possible.
Review and Sign the SR&R by September 30: The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12. Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school. Cellphones and Personal Devices: Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device. Importance of Strong Attendance Habits: September is Attendance Awareness Month. Some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:
- Setting a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
- Laying out clothes and packing backpacks the night before.
- Talking to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning, if they seem anxious about going to school.
- Developing back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- Avoiding medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

Stay in the Know With Here Comes the Bus: Even though FCPS has launched a new bus navigation system, some aspects like the new FCPS My Ride mobile app are still in development. Families should still use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to track the location of their child’s bus. This app is still compatible with the new system. FCPS will notify families and schools when the new app is ready to download and use. In the meantime, everyone should reinforce with students that they need to tap on and off the bus with their student ID cards.
The Importance of the Flu Vaccine: As we look ahead to the upcoming school year, the health and well-being of our students continues to be one of our priorities. Staying up to date with your child's flu vaccination helps:
- Reduce School Absences: Keeping students healthy means more time spent learning and engaging with peers.
- Protect the Community: Vaccination helps shield vulnerable family members and neighbors from seasonal illness.
- Support Overall Wellness: Routine flu shots are a key component of a proactive student health plan.
Upcoming Flu Shot Events: FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations. Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary.
Special Education Family Conference: Connected Communities, Thriving Students: Register now for the annual Special Education Family Conference: Connected Communities, Thriving Students. The free conference will take place on Saturday, November 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hayfield Secondary School. Hosted by FCPS in collaboration with community partners, the conference highlights the power of partnerships in supporting student success. Families, educators, and community members are invited to connect, learn, and explore available special education services, supports, and resources. The conference will feature an inspiring opening session, engaging breakout sessions, an exhibitor hall with local resources, and lunch for all participants.
