Thank you to everyone who joined us for Back-to-School Night last week. It was a great evening that highlighted the Langley school community's commitment to education and engagement with our children.

Arrivals 

It is the highlight of my day to see many of you each morning during arrival. I appreciate everyone's kindness, patience, and attention during arrival in our parking lots. Please keep our Kiss and Ride plan in mind when dropping off your students. Please do not drop students in the parking lot or at Door #1. 

Please keep in mind that school begins at 8:10. If you are dropping off your student, please leave early. If you are a senior parent, please remind your student to leave early enough to be on time and to be safe. 

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and extreme weather. State law requires schools to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance. 

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your child before and after school lockdown drills.

Your Child’s Presence at School Matters The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well and develop strong social and emotional skills. Help prepare your child for future success by building good habits.

Wellness Screening

Mental health problems can develop in adolescence which is full of emotions for teens. Some of these emotions are actually mental illnesses. Depression is among the most common mental illnesses. Depression is treatable; however, it is a leading risk factor for suicide. To proactively address mental illness, Langley High School is providing a mental wellness screening and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program.  Junior Parents were emailed on Thursday, July 30th with additional information regarding this program.   Freshman and Sophomores parents will receive more information in the coming weeks.

College Visits - Week of September 14th

LHS will be hosting college and university admission representatives for information sessions for junior and senior students. The complete and the most up to date list of visits is available in Naviance; a weekly list will be shared on the Class of 2027 and Class of 2028 Schoology pages as well as through News You Choose. 

These visits are for students only and require a signed pass from their teacher to attend; passes are available outside of the Career Center. Attending class should be the priority, students should not miss a test, quiz, or presentation to attend a visit. If students cannot attend, they can contact Ms. Burke for the admission representative's contact information. 

Partners in Safe Teen Driving Presentation

As part of the FCPS Health and PE curriculum, all 10th grade students enrolled in Health & PE 10 complete one quarter of classroom Driver Education.  As part of the Driver Education curriculum, students are required to attend the Partners in Safe Teen Driving Presentation, in person, with at least one parent or guardian. Successful completion of classroom Driver Education AND attendance by the student and parent/guardian enables the student to obtain the DEC-District 8 completion card needed to pursue obtaining a Virginia driver’s license.  While it is recommended that the PSTD seminar requirement be satisfied during the quarter in which the student is taking classroom driver education, students are welcome to attend any quarter within their 10th grade year. All seminars will be held in-person from 6:30-8:00 PM in the auditorium. Please arrive early. Doors will close promptly at 6:30. Attendees who arrive late will not be allowed entry and will not earn credit for attending.

The 90-minute PSTD presentation at Langley High School will be offered on the following dates for the 2026-2027 calendar year:

September 15th

November 4th

February 16th

Important: Students who successfully complete their classroom driver education quarter but have not satisfied the PSTD requirement will have earned an incomplete for the class grade until the requirement is met.

PSAT/SAT | Wednesday, October 7

• PSAT (10^th & 11^th), SAT (Only Opt-In 12th graders)
• No school for grade 9 and seniors not taking SAT 
• Early Release at 12:55 (bus departure)

Attendance Reporting 

How to Report an Absence Through ParentVUE

We highly encourage all our families to use this method for full-day absences.  Reports submitted through Parent VUE are securely sent to the attendance office and do not require a follow-up email or call.

Partial-Day Absences (Late Arrival or Early Dismissal): For late arrivals, early dismissals, or to update a previously submitted attendance report, please email the Attendance Office LangleyHSAttendance@fcps.edu

Checking Out a Student Without a Note or a Sent Email to the Attendance Office: If your student does not have a written note, or the parent has not sent an email to the Attendance Office

• A parent or guardian must come into the building and sign them out at the Attendance Office.
• Provide a photo ID for verification.
• Please allow up to 30 minutes for the checkout process if it is not prearranged.

FCPS has partnered with Hazel Health to help eliminate barriers to quality mental health care services for all high school students, at no cost to families. Therapy sessions with Hazel Health are a safe space and are private and confidential.
