 Today, NIH announced it is awarding $21 million to launch the Computational Modeling of Hormone Homeostasis Initiative, an effort to advance novel human-based, data-driven models tailored to a woman or a man’s complex physiology. Hormone activity varies widely, resulting in differences in how women and men react to medications, including varying outcomes to dosing, treatment response, and drug toxicity. Current mathematical and animal models do not sufficiently capture these sex-specific variations. This new initiative aims to fill this critical gap by supporting awards focused on advancing computational techniques that model and simulate human hormone homeostasis; specific projects will focus on developing sex-specific models to test drugs and therapeutics for effectiveness and toxicity.
The goal is to develop models and scientific evidence that account for sex as a biological variable, ultimately improving the evaluation of new treatments and supporting more informed clinical decisions. The new initiative is led by the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) and Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI), partnering with the Office of Strategic Coordination (OSC) and Office of Research Innovation, Validation, and Application (ORIVA).
