A Russian propaganda operation tricked schools in Latin America and stoked tension between Ukraine and Poland, OpenAI said Thursday in a report previewed exclusively by NBC News.
Russian operators used ChatGPT to document their campaigns, OpenAI said, and at times to inflate their impact to their bosses. The campaign fooled at least one European politician, who spoke to the media about a Russian-orchestrated event. Separately, the report says OpenAI found an Iranian campaign that used fake Western personas and AI-refined columns that were published in 26 smaller outlets around the world.
OpenAI rated the Russian operation a five on the six-point scale measuring how far influence operations spread, the highest of the 30 operations it says it has disrupted since 2024, because its fakes drew responses from politicians and government officials. The scale was created by Ben Nimmo, who now leads the company’s investigations.
