In 2011 I got off a call with my business coach, closed the door to my office and turned away from the window so my staff couldn't see me. Then I put my face in my hands and cried.

I'd barely survived a divorce and my business was almost in ruins. Before that, my family and friends had always relied on me to be their rock.

I was in rooms with successful men back then. In 2014 I sat in a private forum of nine entrepreneurs, all running seven and eight figure businesses, and listened to one of them complain about his sexless marriage and finish with "happy wife, happy life." A few years later, in another men's group, I asked a member who was about to get married whether he'd thought about a prenup, and the whole group piled on me. That's when I swore I wouldn't get involved with any community of men that aren't unplugged.

I started my recovery in December 2016 at a men's retreat, when a friend recommended The Rational Male to me over breakfast. I had a mentor in my 20s who'd often say "iron sharpens iron," and he wasn't wrong. I've spent over a quarter million dollars on coaching and events since then, because coaches work, and because I want to be in rooms where I'm not the smartest guy.

That's why I started the 1% in 2017, and why I built The Skool of Unplugging. I always tell people I'm only worth about 15 to 20% of the value. The other 80% is the men in the room.
