Attention all desserts fans. A new book by artist and foodie Diane Borsato, Dessert Club, is a genre-defying ode to her favourite sweets around the world. The Globe’s food culture reporter Dakshana Bascaramurty joined Barsato recently for a ‘dessert crawl’ on Halifax’s Bedford Highway, where an influx of immigrants have opened up dozens of eateries in the area, making it one of the most exciting places in the city to eat. They sampled everything from booza, a stretchy, chewy Middle Eastern ice cream to lamingtons (an Australian sponge cake) to royal falooda, a multilayered cold dessert. And bonus: You don’t have to spend a fortune. “You can have an exquisite thing and it’s still cheaper than a cocktail in Toronto or eating dinner out,” Borsato says. “It’s like a nice little sample of something extraordinary.”
