The Recommendation

Today we’re talking about our favorite toiletry bags. Plus: a hack for traveling with bar soap, very pretty trunk luggage, and a great deal on some colorful pouches we love.

We’ve been testing toiletry bags for more than a decade—stuffing, shaking, dunking, and examining dozens upon dozens of options for toting your lotions and potions.

And while there is no such thing as a perfect toiletry bag for every kind of traveler, each of our recommendations is spacious, sturdy, and waterproof. Our lineup includes excellent options for light and heavy packers, family vacations, travelers on a budget, and people who would rather throw all their things in one compartment (but still keep their toothbrush separate, thank you very much!).

Plus: A tiny sleeping bag … for your soap?

Matador FlatPak Soap Bar Case

Bar soap is excellent for travel, because a little bar can last a long, long time, and it doesn’t count as liquid in your carry-on. But one problem: It tends to turn into gunky mush, especially if you pack it in a plastic baggie.

Staff writer and travel expert Maria Adelmann found a solve: a perfect-size, leakproof, and quick-drying pouch that keeps bar soap, well, in bar form.

One last thing: We’ve spotted a great deal on some very cute Baggu pouches

Baggu Go Pouch Set.

These machine-washable pouches are excellent for staying organized on the go. (Our gift experts love them, too.) With zipper closures and hanging loops, the multi-sized bags come in fun, bright patterns and are useful for stashing everything from sneakers to toiletries. Newsletters editor Haley Jo Lewis likes to keep a large one in her beach bag so her paperbacks stay separate from her soggy towel. Smart.
