March 2025
This past year has been one of progress and change at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. With the expansion of programs, new community partnerships, and a full year of operating two campuses, we have strengthened our ability to support both pets and people. At the same time, shelters across the country—including ours—are seeing dogs stay longer before finding homes, making our efforts to connect pets with adopters and ensure the well-being of pets in our care more important than ever.
Just a few highlights from the 2024 Annual Report include:
-
Grew the reach of our Pet Resource Center (PRC), serving 4,929 pets in 2024—an 80% increase from 2,737 pets in 2023—while launching new programs and services to keep families together.
-
Strengthened community partnerships with human services agencies like the Lorton Community Action Center, Hybla Valley Community Center, and Rising Hope Mission Church, to bring more resources into our community and meet people where they are.
-
Created more families through innovative programs like the Adoption Audition Program, helping adopters find the right fit while giving pets a chance to shine outside the shelter.
-
Expanded our network of fosters and volunteers, whose compassion and dedication play a vital role in our mission, giving pets comfort and love while they wait for homes.
-
Received incredible support from the Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, which provided $266,250 in total funding for critical programs that enhance pet care, adoption, and enrichment.
None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our incredible community—including Fairfax County residents, adopters, volunteers, fosters, community partners, and more—who make this important work possible.
