Russia says more work to do on Ukraine deal

The Kremlin has expressed "cautious optimism" about a ceasefire deal with Ukraine but said there is more work to do. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also said talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart will take place once Donald Trump has been briefed by his special envoy who met the Russian leader yesterday. Overnight the two sides continued to hit each other with drone strikes, and Kyiv says Russia has stepped up efforts to invade the northern Sumy region. Against this backdrop, G7 foreign ministers are holding their final day of talks in Canada, with wording over a joint statement on the war in Ukraine proving a sticking point.
