Virtual courses have transitioned from being an occasional option to a standard expectation at many colleges and universities, with once-skeptical faculty now often requesting online course expansion, according to a Quality Matters survey. More than half of college students are taking at least one online class. Students' "whole life is hybrid [and] ... involves technology," Chris Montagnino of Champlain College Online explains. Many colleges, though, are struggling to catch up and/or close digital equity gaps. Having internal expertise is crucial, Kemi Jona of the University of Virginia says.
Colleges are facing an enrollment crisis driven by demographic shifts, pandemic effects and doubts about the value of higher education.
