Come join us for nature fun and enrichment. Program costs are $0-$12. Learn something new, bring friends and enjoy the nature of Arlington.

Tiny Tots & Pre-K Programs

Tiny Tots
Ages 18 to 35 months. Each program will engage your child with hands-on learning and may include a variety of activities like songs, crafts, and mini-hikes. Themes repeat so please register for only one program at each center per month. Caregivers must stay with their child during the program. $6.

Preschool Nature Explorers 
Ages 3 to 5. Preschoolers can actively explore their natural world with programs that build the foundation for a lifetime of wonder, appreciation and discovery. Hands-on interactive learning, mini hikes and nature play provide a fun and engaging experience for children. Caregivers must stay with their child during the program. $6.

Fort CF Smith Park

Build a Fort
We'll investigate how and why forts were built in Arlington during the Civil War. Then we'll work as a team to design forts to defend the city.

Park Volunteering
Teens ages 12 to 17. Help us with improving Glencarlyn Park. Each Sunday we will have hands-on projects like weed pulling, raking, trail maintenance and trash pick-up. Your hard work will make the park a better place for both people and nature. Free.

Early Spring Wildflower Walk
Spring beauties, bloodroot, trout lilies! Even before the last frost, some of our spring wildflowers brave the cold to put on a show. Come take a walk and we’ll discuss the fascinating lifestyle and ecology of these plants. Teens ages 12 and up welcome to attend with a registered adult. $6.

Spring Wildflowers & Their Stories
Though roses haven't started to emerge, spring wildflowers are popping up all over Bon Air Park and they have some amazing stories to tell. Medicines, food, folklore and tales of life, love and survival. We'll start at the Rose Garden and explore the whole park. Teens ages 12 and up are welcome to attend with a registered adult. $9.

Native Plant Gardening Clinic
This is a pop-in event and no appointment is necessary. Naturalists and gardeners will be ready to guide you in your native plant gardening journey. You can also get help pre-ordering for our Spring Native Plant Sale. Free.

Introduction to iNaturalist
iNaturalist is an awesome tool to document and learn about the natural world around us. Come learn how to use the phone/tablet app and explore observations on the website, then put it into practice with a walk outside! Teens ages 12 and up welcome to attend with a registered adult. $9.

Nature 101 Workshop: Adaptations
Want to learn more about nature and science? Join a naturalist for a crash course in how to teach environmental science and place-based nature education. Participants will get to be hands-on with learning items, can interact with live animals, and practice presentation skills. Adaptations can be a tricky subject to explain, but we'll break it down as well as discuss inquiry-based learning. Teens ages 12 and up can attend with a registered adult. $6.

Mushroom Walk
This mushroom walk will begin inside the Long Branch Nature Center with an introduction to identification for beginners. We will learn how fungi grow in the soil and their role in the environment. Then we will walk outside, rain or shine, to observe mushrooms in the forest. Teens ages 12 and up are welcome to attend with a registered adult. $6.

Wake Up: Amphibians in Winter & Spring
It’s time for our slimy skinned, jelly egged creatures to start waking up… maybe. Any warm winter day or evening may cause an awakening of wood frogs and other amphibians as they try to lay eggs and emerge before their predators find them. Join us to find their hiding spots before the predators do. $6.

The whole family is invited to join us at the Long Branch Nature Center for lots of old-fashioned fun. This engaging program will be filled with entertaining activities which may include stories, special animal guests, games, songs and of course, S’mores. Arlington Evergreens Hike
Learn about the plants that remain green throughout the winter and hike to see some examples of evergreen species we have in Glencarlyn Park! We will also make a craft all about evergreens. $6.

History Hikes: The Clay-Randolph Duel
On April 8, 1826, Secretary of State Henry Clay and Senator John Randolph crossed the Potomac River into Virginia. Years of bitter political fighting had finally driven the two men to fight a duel, which took place near Pimmit Run. To mark the 196th anniversary of the duel, we will walk the approximate path of the duel and learn how it came to be. $6.

Owl Prowl & Hot Cocoa
Join us for an evening nature hike when the leaves aren’t out and the owls may be easier to spot. Give a hoot… literally as we learn about and try to call to our native nocturnal raptors. Dress for the weather. $9.

Spellbinders Story Fest
Families ages 4 and up. The Arlington Spellbinders will unleash the power of oral storytelling with favorite tales from around the world. Since ancient times in all cultures, this tradition has passed on wisdom, connected elders to youth, and engaged the imagination. Participants may choose a well-loved book to take home! Book donations provided in collaboration with the Friends of Arlington Public Library. Free.
