Worst strike on Ukraine civilians this year

At least 34 people were killed and 117 injured in Sumy on Sunday, in the deadliest attack on civilians in Ukraine so far this year. There was no immediate official comment from Russia, whose forces across the nearby border are said to be preparing for a major offensive. The US, Ukraine's strongest military ally, has been pursuing an end to the war through negotiation. President Trump said the attack was "terrible" and he had been "told they made a mistake", but did not elaborate. President Zelensky has urged the US leader to visit the country before "any kind of decisions, any kind of forms of negotiations". His invitation has yet to receive an answer.

A giant of Latin American literature dies

Mario Vargas Llosa has died at the age of 89 in his native Peru. A winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, he shone a global spotlight on Latin America through his depictions of authoritarianism, violence and machismo. He did not shy away from controversy and enjoyed a rocky friendship with fellow writer Gabriel García Márquez, whom he once punched in the face.
