Tech Across the Globe

Meta goes to Washington: The US Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust trial against Meta began on Monday, with Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg testifying on day one. The proceedings are set to last about two months, during which time former executive Sheryl Sandberg is also expected to testify.

iPhone shipments on the rise: Apple’s iPhone unit shipments surged 10% in the first quarter as part of an effort to accelerate deliveries and avoid expected tariffs on China, according to industry tracker IDC.

$1,900 for a robot vacuum: The Chinese vacuum brand Roborock is about to launch a robotic cleaner with a mechanical arm that can help tidy up. Right now, it can only lift four kinds of objects: socks, paper, tissues and slippers. (Toys are also a future possibility.) It will cost an eye-watering $1,900 in the US, and that’s before potential tariff price hikes.

Revalued

Intel has reached a deal to sell a 51% stake in its programmable chips unit Altera to Silver Lake Management, making good on a promise to start spinning off non-core assets. Intel, which will own 49%, is set to receive about $3.4 billion in cash from Silver Lake as part of the deal, according to people familiar with the matter.

Today’s must read
