There’s more help on the way for families trapped in failing and politicized public schools, specifically in Texas with new scholarships parents can use to spend on the schools of their choice. Jason Bedrick celebrates at the Heritage Foundation: In a historic victory for educational freedom, the Texas House of Representatives finally passed a universal school choice bill—marking not just a win for families in the Lone Star State, but a
watershed moment for the entire school choice movement. Once it clears the state senate and Gov. Greg Abbott signs Senate Bill 2 into law, half of America’s children will live in states where they are eligible for educational choice programs… The governor certainly put in the work to build a legislative majority for reform. A Journal editorial noted after last November’s elections: Greg Abbott needed to win 76 seats out of 150 in the Texas House to enact his school-choice plan next year, and last week he did that and more. “Counting what I call only true, hard core school choice proponents, there are 79 votes in favor in the Texas House,” the Texas Gov. said last week… It’s a hard-fought win for Mr. Abbott, who made Republican opponents of his plan pay a political price. Twenty-one of them joined Democrats last fall to vote down his bill for scholarships worth about $10,000, plus billions in public-school funding. The Governor vowed to go after those who ran for re-election.
