Early in my career as a child/family psychologist, I spent one day a week at an elementary school in central Maine. The school’s principal had assigned me a windowless, closet-like room with a small table and two chairs. I carried a large cloth bag with art supplies, books and small toys that were essentials for child therapy.
Despite the simplicity of my workspace, the situations referred to me were complex. My training had been rigorous, and I felt well-prepared most of the time. But every now and then a traditional treatment plan didn’t work.
