US philanthropies and nonprofits focused on climate change are increasingly worried as the Donald Trump administration is reportedly drafting an executive order that might revoke tax-free status for groups involved in climate and racial justice projects. Most Americans consider climate change a "major threat," per the Pew Research Center, yet the majority "rarely or never" discuss the issue due to a phenomenon known as the "spiral of silence," according to new research from George Mason University and Yale University. The Environmental Protection Agency may ease coal ash regulations, in a possible reversal of stricter rules implemented by the Biden administration. Critics worry that the deregulation could lead to increased groundwater contamination, as coal ash contains heavy metals like arsenic and lead. The first federal standards were introduced in 2015 in response to disasters involving coal ash and require water monitoring and liners for new storage sites to prevent groundwater pollution.
