The One Where the Athletes Were Best Dressed

What's going on: No shade to the NBA or NHL playoffs, but this week’s real highlight was the Met Gala, where the athletes’ looks scored plenty of points. From the internet’s pick for best-dressed player, Gabby Thomas in her off-the-shoulder ensemble, to these New York Liberty stars making their gala debut, athletes understood the assignment. And while fans debate whether Simone Biles’s look deserved a gold medal, others can’t get over the couples that brought chemistry to the blue carpet (see: Jalen Hurts and Bry Burrows, and Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union).

Our take: The Met Gala has been a magnet for Hollywood’s biggest stars, but athletes have steadily gained a presence over the years. This year’s gala was even co-chaired by LeBron James (who RSVP’d no last minute) and Lewis Hamilton. Sha’Carri Richardson, Angel Reese, and Biles also served on the host committee. Their involvement shows how fashion and sports are increasingly intertwined, especially thanks to women athletes who’ve been leading that charge. (Just look at the WNBA tunnel walks.) As Reese once put it, “You can be cute and go out there and still ball.”
