Credit: Reuters/Dylan Martinez | Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV delivered a message of peace from the balcony overlooking St Peter's Square after being unveiled as the new pontiff. Speaking in Italian, he praised his predecessor and said: "God loves us all, unconditionally". Cardinal Robert Prevost, who becomes the first American to lead the Catholic Church, then spoke in Spanish as he thanked his former diocese in Peru. Religion editor Aleem Maqbool says he will be seen as someone who can bridge different worlds. |
