Chicago Tribune Opinion

Thursday, May 15, 2025

Good morning.

Most days with Donald Trump as president are kind of a roller coaster, and today the editorial board looks at one aspect of that experience: investing. For all the ups and downs of the last several months, the stock market now is essentially back to where it began the year. But stability, this surely is not.

The editorial board also warns lawmakers in Springfield and Gov. JB Pritzker against breaking Pritzker's promise not to raise taxes despite a budget that just got more than $500 million more challenging to balance.

Paul Vallas, who lost to Mayor Brandon Johnson in 2023, assesses the mayor's performance so far. You can imagine the verdict, but consider his arguments.

And we have two opinion pieces considering the trend of teen flash mobs, why they're occurring and how to address their causes.

We've got thoughtful reader letters as well, responding to some recent editorials. As always, your opinions are greatly appreciated. Have a great day, and we'll talk to you tomorrow.

— Steve Daniels, editorial board member
