| | Top of the morning to you, Chicago. The mercury is going to rise into the 80s today — and along with it the dew point, much to my high-humidity-hating horror. I don’t know whether to blame my Irish, Swedish, Polish or Russian heritage for my repulsion to soupy air. For those who thrive in these conditions, I doff my sweat-soaked hat to you. We have a packed, topical opinion section today because the news just keeps coming. Our foreign affairs columnist Daniel DePetris considers the escalating warfare between Israel and Iran and concludes that Iran’s supreme leader has few options. The president of the Illinois Policy Institute pulls no punches as he condemns the power consolidation that Michael Madigan, sentenced last week for corruption, achieved as Illinois House speaker and the repercussions for our state. (Our letter writers also have thoughts to share about the disgraced Madigan.) And attorney — and amateur historian — Michael Peregine looks back fondly on the Blackhawks’ winning streak of the last decade when Chicago was a true championship city. In its offerings, the Tribune Editorial Board first examines the shocking targeting of Democratic Minnesota lawmakers over the weekend that left a state representative and her husband dead and a state senator and his wife wounded. The board urges people on all sides to dial down the divisive rhetoric, which it believes is leading some to act on their political enmity with violence. In its other piece, the board wonders how anti-immigration hard-liner Stephen Miller feels about his boss’s reversal on deporting agricultural and hospitality workers. Stay cool and dry. We’ll see you tomorrow. — Colleen Kujawa, opinion editor Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter | | If Iran’s attacks are designed to push Israel into suspending its military campaign, then they’ve failed. | | | Michael Madigan crafted rules that continue to give Illinois House speakers unparalleled power to control which bills become law. | | | Ten years later, it’s fun to remember. The Blackhawks’ extraordinary success captivated not only their fan base, but also the city. | | | Our culture too often reduces disagreement to moral absolutes: You’re with me or you’re a villain. We must resist that temptation. | | | ICE should stick to undocumented criminals. Whatever President Donald Trump says. | | | The conviction and sentencing of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan should give pause to those in positions of trust. | | | |
