Gov. Mike Dunleavy has vetoed a bill that lawmakers said was meant to ensure oil and gas companies are paying their full share of taxes to the Alaska treasury, arguing that the bill would delegate too much authority to a legislative committee.
The “No Kings” protest was one of many that took place across the U.S. on Saturday, coalescing around frustration and anger with the Trump administration. Peaceful protests — and counterprotests — were held in a number of other Alaska communities, including Homer, Sitka, Seward, Fairbanks, Nome and Palmer.
School districts and elected officials were reeling in the hours after the governor vetoed tens of millions of dollars in education funding from the state budget, weeks after lawmakers had overridden his previous veto of a permanent increase to the school funding formula.
