Will Any SNL Stars Nab Emmy Nominations? |
We are in the heat of Emmy-nominations voting (which wraps up June 23), and there are lots of competitive races this year. I’m Rebecca Ford, and two of the races I’ll be keeping a close eye on are comedy supporting actor and actress. That’s because those categories are where Saturday Night Live cast members might show up.
It’s a very competitive year in comedy, with new shows like The Studio, Nobody Wants This, Running Point, and The Four Seasons all joining the race along with strong returning shows like Hacks, Abbott Elementary, and Shrinking. So there’s not a lot of room here to begin with. And Saturday Night Live has a spotty record when it comes to acting nominations. In 2021, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Cecily Strong all earned Emmy noms. But other years, cast members haven’t been included at all. No female SNL cast member has been nominated since 2022; Bowen Yang has been nominated in 2021, 2022, and 2024, but he’s alone among the show’s male cast members. Will any of them break through this year?
I’m personally keeping my eye on Marcello Hernández, whose Domingo character was immensely popular this season. My colleague Chris Murphy spoke to Hernández and several others who were involved in that hit sketch for this fascinating oral history, which reveals how that colorful sketch came together. It would be wonderful to see Hernández get an Emmy nomination—but again, in such a crowded field, it won’t be easy. |
