Chicago Tribune Opinion

Wednesday, June 18, 2025

Good morning, Chicago.

The Senate finally released its version of President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill.” The Tribune Editorial Board thinks that this version of the bill is a mixed bag. Read the board’s thoughts here.

Talking to a therapist or counselor has become more commonplace in today’s world, so finding a good human to discuss your problems with can be tough. To fill the gap, some are thinking of outsourcing this soul-searching work to artificial intelligence chatbots. The editorial board and the state of Illinois do not think this is a good idea. Both houses of the Illinois legislature passed a bill that would ban anyone from providing therapy via AI. The board encourages Gov. JB Pritzker to sign this bill in its other piece today.

Columnist Laura Washington breaks some news in our section today about a bid to open a location of Chicago’s iconic LGBTQ+ bar Sidetrack at O’Hare. This is far from a done deal, but Laura talked to stakeholders who spoke about the symbolism of having a gay bar at one of the nation’s biggest airports.

Also today, former Illinois politician Jim Nowlan has an idea for getting the state of Illinois to think beyond next year’s budget deficit. Visionary thinking sure is needed, he writes. Our readers also discuss in letters to the editor a recent op-ed we published on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers wearing masks.

Thanks for reading and stay dry!
