A global payroll platform presents a new toy.

Greetings, friends. Severe rain and thunderstorms have been hammering the Midwest and Northeast this week. Hopefully the storms will move through the region with more haste than your employees bring to the midyear review process.

Global employment and payroll platform, Remote, launched a new HR information system (HRIS) last week designed specifically for remote-first teams operating across international borders.

The move comes as more companies look to hire overseas, according to its own 2024 Global Workforce Report, which found that 71% of employers have “recruited outside their national borders” in the last year. The release of Remote HRIS marks a significant expansion for the global payroll platform, which has been providing employer of record (EOR) and payroll services since 2019.

“It’s literally everything you need to do administration for…the life cycle of an employee,” said Remote cofounder and CEO Job van der Voort, pointing to onboarding tools for background checks and verification, contracts and agreements, and device management; solutions for employees like managing PTO or public holidays in different countries, time tracking, shift management; and finally, help with managing employee exits whether they quit, retire, or are fired.

The Department of Labor (DOL) is expanding efforts to assist employers with compliance matters by issuing opinion letters, according to a recent announcement from the agency.

Five enforcement agencies within the DOL will be involved with the expanded program, including the Wage and Hour Division (WHD), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Employee Benefits Security Administration. Some agencies may provide other forms of guidance, such as advisory opinions or letters of interpretation, as part of the program.

Opinion letters explain how these agencies enforce federal laws and regulations in the case of specific workplace situations. Though the first Trump administration relied heavily on opinion letters—the Wage and Hour Division issued 80 during his first term, according to law firm Littler Mendelson—the Biden administration was less dependent on this type of guidance, with the WHD issuing just eight.

A pestle isn’t just for grinding up herbs.

It’s also an acronym encompassing a business analysis framework that helps businesses devise strategies that account for various macroenvironmental challenges. Many business leaders and experts, including Sandra Reed, an HR consultant of more than 25 years who also authors HR certification prep books, support the framework.

The different factors that PESTLE stands for are:

  • Political
  • Economic
  • Social
  • Technology
  • Legal
  • Environmental

“Those are the forces that drive business strategy or competitiveness,” Reed said. “So my services take HR within the framework of PESTLE.”
