The Watchdog Weighs In
Amid mixed results in two court cases seeking to halt the destruction of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a new report from the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office has found the gutting of the IMLS to be illegal—setting the stage for a potential legal showdown over the separation of powers. We’re on the ground at the 2025 Beijing International Book Fair, which kicks off today and expects a record number of exhibitors and attendees. Eschewing the increasingly common corporate buyout, David Black has transferred ownership of his eponymous literary agency to longtime employee Sarah Smith. The Nation highlights various dangers posed by big tech and warns against treating AI tools as “neutral.” Meanwhile, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has said that the company’s corporate workforce will shrink in the coming years as it adopts AI, per CNBC. The conservative city council in Huntington Beach, Calif., has lost its book banning crusade, reports SFGate. The Comics Journal goes long on the drama at Diamond Comic Distributors, just as the Beat reports on yet another legal battle for Diamond, which is now being taken to court by unpaid creditor Dynamite Comics. On Substack, Alyssa Morris offers up a BookTok trend round up—what people are loving, what they’re hating, and what’s still going strong. The New Yorker’s Katy Waldman takes on James Frey’s new novel. And longtime Thames & Hudson head Thomas Neurath has died at 84.
