Adapting a Beloved Book? Call Joseph Zada |
You may not recognize Joseph Zada’s name now—but soon you will. The 19-year-old Australian has roles in three splashy literary adaptations, one of which is out now: He’s starring as tortured rich boy Johnny Sinclair Dennis in Prime Video’s We Were Liars. Next year, he’ll play Cal Trask—a part originated by James Dean on film—in Netflix’s updated take on East of Eden. And after that, it’s off to the Hunger Games universe, where he’ll play a younger version of Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch opposite industry heavyweights like Kieran Culkin, Glenn Close, Ralph Fiennes, Elle Fanning, and Jesse Plemons. “It’s weird. It’s really weird,” Zada tells Savannah Walsh in his first big solo interview. “It’s a different world now. I’ve got to be a lot more careful about what I’m doing and saying, which is always a good thing. But it’s a little scary sometimes.”
