Editor’s note: We don’t have a new issue this Sunday, so we’re resharing some Globe Magazine stories from the archives worth a read this holiday weekend. We’ll be back next week with The Boston Globe’s Best of the Best issue. Thank you for reading!
Cooper Flagg’s meteoric rise
The Celtics may be rebuilding on the fly this summer, but a couple of young New England phenoms are on top of the basketball world. The Dallas Mavericks surprised exactly no one last month when they selected Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. Flagg dominated in his year at Duke, but before that he was a youngster in Newport, Maine, obsessing over DVDs of the Celtics’ 1985-86 championship season. Chad Finn chronicled Flagg’s meteoric rise for the Globe Magazine.
Meanwhile, Brockton native AJ Dybantsa, an incoming freshman at BYU, is also on a glide path to NBA stardom. A projected top pick in next year’s draft, Dybantsa has a power forward’s build and a point guard’s fluidity – and is one of the most exciting prospects ever from Massachusetts. Adam Himmelsbach wrote about how Dybantsa’s local roots and family keep him grounded amid all the hype.

Hewitt faces multiple felony charges, including forgery and identity fraud. Explore Hewitt’s case to understand how she managed to pose as a teenager for so long — andwhy she did it — with investigations from Globe Magazine staff writer Patricia Wen.
