Hey there. Orianna here from Fortune.
Emma Grede, the powerhouse behind Kim Kardashian’s $4 billion Skims empire, recently admitted something to me that’ll probably make you feel better about your own tech skills: She was using AI "like a 42-year-old woman".
Despite knowing how important it is to get ahead of the curve and even paying her employees cash bonuses for finding creative AI uses two years ago, she was still treating ChatGPT as a search engine and delegating anything more complicated.
That changed when Mark Cuban appeared on her podcast. In an exclusive interview with Fortune, Grede talked about how the two sat down and compared their AI usage.
Cuban had a staggering 60 AI apps on his phone and a blunt message for bosses: If you’re not learning AI, "you’re f--ked," he told her. It “gave me a new urgency around how I use AI,” Grede added.
The wake-up call worked: The British entrepreneur has signed up for AI courses at Wharton and Harvard this fall. And other leaders should take note.
As Ex-Google exec Mo Gawdat recently warned, CEOs are too busy celebrating their AI-driven “productivity gains” to notice that if they’re not careful, they too could be automated. Only the most “competent” AI-savvy leaders will survive, he added.
