… what the hell does indie rock band 10,000 Maniacs have to do with anything, much less starting a “live anywhere, earn everywhere” business at midlife?

Sure, Natalie Merchant is as smart and talented as ever, and the band had a nice run between 1987 and 1993.

But I’m referring to the number of raving fans you need to succeed… and it’s a whole lot less than 10,000.

You’ve heard of 1,000 true fans, yes? No?

That term was coined by former Wired editor Kevin Kelly, who said that if a creator can get just 1,000 people who are truly into them to spend only $100 per year, they’ve got a six figure income.

Let’s not quibble on the math. It’s a generally sound principle.

But people get hung up on the number.

The part to focus on is the fans (as in fanatics). Lean in a bit harder, and you might call these people maniacs for you and your work.

These people buy whatever you offer. I experienced this first hand with Copyblogger, where 10,000 maniacs pushed a bootstrapped company that didn’t even advertise into the 8-figure realm.

Now think about this in terms of your own business of expertise in an industry or niche that needs tools, training, and lifelong learning. And they trust you to tell them what’s worth their attention and money.

That can be way more than $100 in annual revenue per fan. Which means you actually need less than 1,000 true fans to make six figures.

Now consider that you do have 1,000 true fan(atic)s.

Or 5,000.

Or 10,000.

Okay… now you can do the math.
