Scottish indie legends Franz Ferdinand have become the latest rock band to join the growing number of musicians to sponsor a grassroots football team.

Franz Ferdinand’s distinctive logo is proudly being worn by Scottish side Symington Tinto 2014s this season thanks to a long friendship between a club coach and the band’s bassist Bob Hardy.

The band, who shot to fame with iconic 2004 hit Take Me Out, have joined the likes of US rapper 50 Cent and rock bands Mogwai and The Prodigy in sponsoring a kids’ football team, with Symington Tinto now fielding enquiries from the band’s fans about whether they will be selling replicas of the kit.

Thanks to the likes of Fontaines DC and Oasis, football shirts sporting the logos of bands have become hugely popular in recent years but, for now, only Tinto 2014s will be lucky enough to wear the Franz Ferdinand kits, as there are currently no plans to make them commercially available.

Speaking to the BBC, the club’s vice president, Daniel Harwood, said approaching the band was a punt that has well and truly paid off.

He said: “We have a number of teams and we're constantly looking for sponsorship for them.

“Usually it's local companies around the area or people who have connections with kids playing in the team.

“Franz was a bit of a shot in the dark. One of the club coaches, Fraser White, was flatmates with one of the band at university and thought he'd try asking them. We were surprised when they said yes.

“We're over the moon at everything since then. The amount of interaction on social media we've had, and the amount of people from all over the world who have commented on posts about it, has been fantastic.”

The move has helped the club, who play in the village of Symington in South Lanarkshire and are represented by an adult amateur team and eight youth sides, gain plenty of publicity.

“The club is volunteer-run,” Daniel said. “So a lot of people put time and effort into it all. We’re really trying to make it as accessible as possible for kids in the village and any support helps.”
