Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

This week, our students—whether they were exploring concepts as readers, writers, mathematicians, or scientists—have been busy! They've been making new discoveries, challenging their thinking, and bravely taking risks in their learning.

We encourage you to keep these exciting explorations going at home! Please take some time to check in with your student about what they're learning and how they can apply those new strategies to real-world situations.

Also, to ensure a strong home-school partnership, please make sure you've scheduled your parent-teacher conference.

We also want to thank our PTA, our families, and community for all you are doing to support our Cub Run-a-thon! We have hit 78% of our goal and have raised $22,260 so far! Please see exciting updates below from our PTA. We are extremely grateful for your support!

A reminder that Wednesday, October 15 is an early release Wednesday. To confirm/change how your student will be dismissed, please complete the google form below.

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Uncovering Characters in Language Arts

Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about different characters in stories and their own personal sense of character.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: How does the way you act change the way you think about yourself?
  • Activity: Draw a new cover for a favorite book featuring the main character in a key moment.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website

Important Reminder Regarding Lexia

Families, you may have heard your child(ren) talk about Lexia- it is a great program that helps students learn and grow in the foundations of reading. While we understand that families would love for their child(ren) to continue this learning outside of school, per Fairfax County’s guidelines regarding Lexia, students should not be accessing Lexia from home in elementary school. Lexia provides teachers with weekly data reports on student skills that help us to create lessons and reading groups that best meet the needs of each student. This data comes from a weekly usage target that is met through the week while students are in school, while also receiving appropriate support from their teacher as they move through the program. This Lexia Family Information Website provides families with information on what Lexia is and Lexia-Adjacent activities that parents/guardians can do at home with students to support their Literacy development.

Upcoming Abilities Test for All Second Graders, Other Select Students

Beginning in October 2025, all second grade students and select students in grades three through seven will take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT) as a universal abilities screener.

This assessment measures a student's general intellectual ability in three key areas: verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative. Abilities tests are differentiated from achievement tests as students should not be preparing for the assessment.

An abilities test is one of several tools that schools use to better understand a student’s reasoning strengths and learning profile. Teachers review results with other information to help plan instruction and support. Results can also help determine if a student needs advanced academic services.

Individual schools will send notification letters to families whose students are scheduled to participate in this assessment. Families can reference the testing requirements for each grade level in FCPS on the Grade Level Tests page.

Positivity Project

This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of Open-Mindedness. This means being willing to consider new ideas and try new things. It involves looking at situations from all sides and not jumping to conclusions.

Open-mindedness is about seeking out and fairly weighing evidence, even if it goes against our own opinions or goals. Open-minded people listen to different viewpoints, including those that are less popular. They are often good listeners and provide balanced advice, which makes them great friends and confidants. This strength helps individuals form meaningful and lasting relationships.

To practice and encourage the character strength of open-mindedness at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Thank you for your support!

Every Day is a Stepping Stone to Success

Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now to help them graduate from college on time and routinely report to work on time once they have a career.

Please take a look at the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered “chronically absent.”

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to our school. Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for resources on attendance.

Cub Run-a-thon!

Cubbies, we have less than 18 days until the Cub Run-A-Thon! We have hit 78% of our goal and raised $22,260! We have 272 students registered!

Students have earned a pizza party! This will take place on Wednesday, October 29, during lunch! Pizza will be ordered from Costco for all students and staff. The PTA is only providing pizza so everyone should plan to bring in their own healthy sides and drinks (or purchase from the school cafeteria). Please contact Mrs. Miller at mhmiller@fcps.edu if you would like to opt-out your child from receiving pizza during this event.

We have 5 lucky raffle winners again this week! Check your child’s backpack to see if they won a prize!

We have 4 more classes who met their goals and have earned a popsicle party!

  • Ms. Welliver’s 2nd grade class
  • Ms. Sisk’s 3rd grade class
  • Ms. Hoey’s 2nd grade class
  • Ms. Kehaiov’s preschool class

Ms. Coch’s 2nd grade class and Ms. Dent’s 6th grade class are super close to meeting their goals! There’s still time to register and donate!

We are looking for volunteers for the Cub Run-a-Thon that will take place on Friday, October 24th. We have plenty of volunteer assignments for all types of schedules! We need parent support to ensure that we can have a successful event!

October is…

National Bullying Prevention Month

Bullying in FCPS' Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student.

National School Lunch Week - October 13-17
