Every year around this time, I consider the seasonal tradeoff: I’ll miss zucchini and tomatoes, but I’m pretty happy about the abundance of apples and pears. As you settle into fall and all its flavors, here are three fun questions to get a conversation going with your kids! —Jen Shotz, Senior Editor
1. A recent study found that elephants use a range of at least 38 gestures—like hitting the ground with a stick or throwing sand—to tell people when they want something. Have you seen your pets or other animals use gestures to tell you something? What do you think they were trying to say?
2. Flag football will be one of the sports played at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, California—and on October 2, Roger Goodell, commissioner of the NFL, announced that the NFL will launch professional flag football leagues for men and women in the “next couple of years.” If you could add any sport to the Summer Olympics, what would it be?
3. Should paper money get new faces? American cash is known for its large portraits of US historical figures, like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Alexander Hamilton, and Andrew Jackson. But some people feel our bills should get a new look and recognize the contributions of other important Americans, like Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., or Eleanor Roosevelt. What do you think? Your child can vote in our big debate!
