This week, after news broke that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of a cease-fire deal, I went back to reread this essay by the former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk. In it, he wrote that the devastating war in Gaza has, paradoxically, resurrected “the allegedly dead two-state solution,” and argued that no other alternative “would resolve the conflict—at least not without causing even greater calamities.” It’s a valuable piece and takes on new urgency in light of this tenuous deal.
