One of the biggest changes to Halloween I’ve seen in my neighborhood over the years: the rise of the family costume. I’ve had everyone from the Incredibles to the Addams Family to the crew of Toy Story at my door. (My mom cat-ears aren’t cutting it any more!) In between running errands for Halloween—like picking up any supplies you need to do these Halloween activities)—here are three fun questions for the car! —Gail O’Connor, Senior Editor
1. California has become the first state in the U.S. to ban ultraprocessed foods from being served in schools. The new law defines an ultraprocessed food by several factors, including high amounts of added sugar, flavor enhancers, and food dyes. What foods found in nature do you think are naturally delicious?
2. The toy company Mattel has unveiled four new Barbies in the likeness of rugby players, including US Olympic medalist Ilona Maher. The doll, which will be available in 2026, features a “straighter, more athletic torso, visibly defined arms, shoulders and legs, plus sculpted core and back muscles,” according to Mattel. Which other athletes do you think should get a doll?
3. Has Halloween gotten too scary? The holiday has always been rooted in spooky traditions, but some say Halloween displays have become too graphic. Others say it’s OK to be a little scared! What do you think? Your child can vote in our big debate!
