"What Happened Now?" is a lively roundup and analysis of the top stories of the day in Northeast Ohio from News 5's Joe Donatelli. It’s like getting the news from a friend who aspires to attend the Olympics of baking and grab a bite while he’s there.
Are any of these deadly police chases worth it? A Cleveland police officer didn't ask for permission for a chase that had deadly results for a father of six, reports Tara Morgan. That’s one of several findings by an investigator with the Office of Professional Standards and the Civilian Police Review Board. The officer gave unauthorized chase, police say, because of a minor traffic violation – the kind any of us has probably made. The driver then blew through a light, crashed and died. During a Civilian Police Review Board meeting on Oct. 14, the officer was found to have violated police policies by engaging in an unauthorized pursuit of Michael Yearout, failing to document a traffic stop, and failing to notify dispatch. It was also discovered that the officer did not turn on his body camera, not only during Yearout's traffic stop but also for four other incidents that day. Watch Tara Morgan’s report.
Food resources available for those who may lose SNAP benefits or who are not receiving federal paychecks: Hundreds of thousands across Northeast Ohio could lose SNAP benefits on Nov. 1, and organizations across the area are available to help food-insecure individuals and families. Maya Morita compiled a big list.
Outside agency to investigate double-amputee’s death in custody: A spokesperson for Cuyahoga County Sheriff Harold Pretel confirmed to News 5 Investigators the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office will handle the investigation into Tasha Grant's death, reports Scott Noll.
This is a very big deal in the world of competitive baking: Cleveland Heights' On The Rise Artisan Breads bakery finished as a top 10 finalist in pastries and a top 12 finisher in bread after representing the U.S. for the first time since 2017 at the prestigious Mondial Du Pain in France, which is the Olympics of baking. We like to say we have great food in this city, and now some snooty European food people agree.
‘Chasing Accountability’: The shootings. The chases. The public outcry. We've chronicled concerns about the sheriff's department's Downtown Safety Patrol. Is a specialized unit of deputies making Cleveland safer, or putting too many people at risk? Tonight, in a special edition of News 5 at 7, Tara Morgan takes a hard look at the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Downtown Safety Patrol. A lot of work went into this – worth the watch.
