I hurled the pass into the end zone. Boom! Caught! Now I know how Tom Brady feels. Of course, I don’t actually play any sport involving balls. But I am a grandma, always vying for number-one ranking among the grandparents. Last week, I nailed a big win against our chief rival. If you share your grandchildren with more than one set of grandparents, you get it. It’s a competition.
My husband and I joined the league in 2010. We had the home-field advantage. Our first granddaughter was born in our town hospital and lived a mere three miles from our house. All the firsts — smile, rollover, sit-up, and steps — occurred in our stadium. The local fans supported our team—both sets of great-grandparents, cousins, great aunts and uncles. We understood the rules of possession. When the opposing grandparents visited from Ontario, we kept our distance. After their long weekend, we would resume our status as local resident grandparents.
