Queen Elizabeth II famously called 1992 her “annus horribilus,” due to the various personal heartbreaks and scandals that plagued her family over the course of those 12 months. But her third child, the British aristocrat now known only as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, might be feeling an urge to adopt that term himself for 2025. This fall alone, Andrew has agreed to give up all of his royal titles and been forced to leave his royally sanctioned residence; his ex-wife and the mother of his children, Sarah Ferguson, has been battered in the British tabloids for allegedly emailing convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein long after she swore she had cut off contact with him; and in October, Knopf released Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, in which the Epstein survivor recounts allegedly being abused by Andrew. This week, the House Oversight Committee also released tens of thousands of Epstein emails—including correspondence between the disgraced financier and an interlocutor known only as “The Duke,” who certainly sounds like Andrew. As Erin Vanderhoof recounts, the emails shed new light on what happened when the Mail on Sunday published a photo showing Andrew with Giuffre, including this message from a PR rep who suggested a plan to hit back at the tabloid. “We should think about a letter to the editor today,” he wrote. “‘School’ can mean university. Age of consent in Florida is complex.” Shudder.

A new trove of over 20,000 documents from the Jeffrey Epstein estate was released on Wednesday, providing unprecedented insight into how the late financier and convicted pedophile interacted with his associates and famous friends. Following an initial drop of emails that showed Epstein discussing President Donald Trump, the House Oversight Committee released a series of unredacted emails sent to and from Epstein, including at least two that appear to have been sent from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. |
