November 13th, 2025
Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,
The FHES students did a great job showing their talents and appreciations on Monday for the 40th annual Veterans Day assembly. It was a pleasure to have so many veterans in attendance to enjoy the performance. Town of Vienna Mayor Linda Colbert was in attendance and shared with me today that she was honored to attend the assembly and shared her experience with the American Legion Post 180 this week. Thank you to Mrs. d'Alelio, Ms. Golomb and the many other staff members who helped to make this event possible.
FHES was also recognized by the Town of Vienna for an award-winning parade float! The Lion King themed float won first prize for floats without music. Over 80 floats participated in the parade and it was a great showing of school spirit!
Don't forget, the next PTA meeting will be on Thursday, November 20th at 6:00 pm in the FHES library. Be sure to join in-person or via Zoom to learn more about ways you can support Flint Hill. Special guests will include the 5th grade team, advanced academics and The Space Gal!
The Turkey Trot is back! Before we leave for Thanksgiving vacation, join our classes on the FHES track to run, jog, walk or trot with your students on Tuesday, November 25th. See more details about how to participate below.
Be sure to review the new changes to volunteer procedures for FCPS that have been announced. The fingerprinting requirement has been reduced for most volunteers and updated information on how to proceed as a volunteer/chaperone is included in the message below.
Kindly,
Mr. Montaquila, Principal
Mr. Baker, Assistant Principal
November 20 at 6PM in the FHES Library
We’re thrilled to welcome Emily Calandrelli, “The Space Gal," to our next PTA meeting! Emily is a FHES parent, an MIT-trained engineer, Emmy-nominated science TV host, and the 100th woman to fly to space! Emily is a passionate STEM advocate and author of several inspiring books for kids, including Reach for the Stars, Stay Curious and Keep Exploring, and the Ada Lace Adventures series. Don't miss this incredible opportunity to hear from Emily about the power of curiosity, creativity, and STEM education.
In addition, we’ll hear from our amazing fifth-grade team, Principal Montaquila, and our Advanced Academic Program (AAP) teacher Mrs. Altounian, who will share updates, student highlights, and exciting ways our school is fostering innovation and learning in every classroom.
It’s going to be an inspiring evening you won’t want to miss!

In the coming days, all families will receive an individual attendance report card for their student in the mail. This is a school created report that will share attendance data with families from the first quarter. The purpose of this mailing is to make sure families are aware of their student's individual attendance so far this year.
We understand that illnesses, family obligations, travel and other circumstances can take students away from school throughout the year.
By sharing an attendance report card with families now, we hope that you can plan your year accordingly and encourage consistent daily attendance for your students before patterns of absences may impact learning later in the year.
When students are present in school, they can engage more with their teachers, instruction, interventions and opportunities for learning.

Flint Hill staff and students were honored with a 1st Place Ribbon for our entry at the City Council Meeting this past Monday for the the 79th Town of Vienna Halloween Parade!
FHES competed in the "Floats without Music" category, which includes any float that does not feature musical performers. With over 80 entries in this year's parade, we are thrilled that Flint Hill received this recognition.
This year's float was successfully coordinated and built by the following staff and community members:
- Jeffrey Bechtle, Sarah McAlister, Fiorela Salazar Jaldin, John Pacitti, Corey Peterson, Deanna Marquez, Sabrina Maizland Combs
The float was constructed using donated and recycled materials, and the wonderful artwork was created by Flint Hill students. Thank you to all the amazing students who contributed in art class, helped with construction after school, and walked alongside the float during the parade.
We also want to give a special thanks to Kimi McCool for donating the giant umbrella used to create the "tree of life," and to Matt Robinson for providing hay bales for students to sit on.

FCPS has enabled new parent controls within the Lightspeed Parent Portal to support families in managing screentime on FCPS devices at home. Parents can now manage their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing on district-issued devices, during designated "After School Hours" while students are off the FCPS network.
These parental controls are only active Monday-Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM, and all day on weekends and student holidays when students are off the FCPS network. Parental controls do not interfere with district filtering policies during the instructional day.
Parents can register for the Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.
For more information on Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.

Due to the overwhelming response from our community, FCPS is temporarily pausing fingerprint requirements for most Level 3 volunteers.
If you are scheduled for an upcoming fingerprinting appointment, please cancel your appointment unless you are a mentor, host parent, or non-parent volunteer having frequent, direct, and unsupervised contact with students, which will still require fingerprinting. FCPS will be charged if individuals miss a fingerprinting appointment without canceling in advance.
Those who have already been fingerprinted will be processed to be eligible for all Level 3 opportunities.
Field trip chaperone opportunities will now be classified as Level 2 (not requiring a background check).
To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal attestation confirming you have no history of violent felonies, physical/sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude.
Want to volunteer? Visit Volunteer FCPS to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Contact Volunteers@fcps.edu with any questions.
