Parent Coffee on Selective Mutism

Dear Navy Families and Caregivers,

Please Join us tomorrow for coffee, pastries, and a presentation on Selective Mutism from an Oakton High School Senior and alumna of Navy ES. She was inspired to take a deep dive into selective mutism through the DECA Program at Oakton High. Please check-in at the front office and meet us in the SACC room at 9:15am. We look forward to spending Friday morning with you!

Presentation Outline

Selective Mutism (SM) is an anxiety-based communication disorder where a child who can speak comfortably in some situations, like at home, finds it extremely difficult or impossible to speak in others, such as at school or in public. This presentation is designed to help parents better understand what selective mutism is, why it happens, and how they can best support their child’s confidence and communication. Whether your child has SM, struggles with shyness, or you simply want to learn more, this event will provide valuable insights and practical strategies.

During the presentation, parents will learn how to recognize the signs of selective mutism, explore evidence-based approaches to help children overcome speaking fears, and gain tips on working with teachers, counselors, and peers to create a supportive environment. We’ll also share real stories, expert advice, and resources you can use at home and in school settings.

Plus, there will be free pastries and refreshments! Come join us for an informative and welcoming session where you can connect with other parents, ask questions, and leave feeling more equipped to help your child find their voice.
