New to Netflix this week is
The Beast in Me,
an eight-episode psychological thriller starring Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys. Danes has won legions of fans for her emotive on-screen performances, and she’s mostly in top form again here, playing moody Aggie Wiggs, a prize-winning author still grieving the death of her young son. When Nile Jarvis (Rhys) moves into the mansion next door, things get interesting for Aggie, who finds herself intrigued by the neighbour who was accused of murdering his wife. This is a strong premise for a show, writes TV critic J. Kelly Nestruck, but there’s a hiccup: when the second episode introduces a second potential murder to the plot, Danes’ performance suffers from inconsistency.
