Mom with green card held over a week at airport without family contact, lawyer says

A mother of six from Rhode Island who’s been a green card holder since she was a child has been detained at Boston’s Logan airport for more than a week over a decade-old warrant, according to her family and lawyer.

Eva Mendes, 48, was detained upon returning to the United States on Nov. 5 from the island nation of Cabo Verde, for her brother’s funeral, and was told she would be held overnight as customs agents looked into a warrant for a 2012 shoplifting charge, according to a court filing requesting that she have a hearing over her custody status. Her lawyer said he hasn’t been able to speak with her since she’s been held.

“We believe her constitutional rights are being violated daily, hourly and by the minute,” attorney Todd Pomerleau told NBC10 Boston Friday.

Our Saturday will start dry, but all bets are off tonight. We’re tracking rain moving in.

Much of this Saturday morning and afternoon will feature mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies here in Greater Boston. High temperatures will be in the mid 40s.

Late this afternoon, clouds will increase all ahead of a frontal system that will push rain over the southern New England by tonight, likely after 7 or 8 p.m. The rain could be heavy at times, but no severe weather is expected.

Wu discusses Trump administration, Boston priorities during interview in Canada

Mayor Michelle Wu is back in Boston after a whirlwind week in Canada, where she retrieved the city’s annual Christmas tree from Nova Scotia.

The tradition dates to the 1917 Halifax Harbor explosion and relief aid sent north by the people of Boston, but it was the first time a mayor traveled to get the tree in person.

“This year, under the questions of our federal policy under the Trump regime, which has really unnecessarily put strain on longtime relationships and friendships,” Wu said, “I wanted to make sure it was clear that in Boston, we remember and act differently towards those who have been our longtime allies and friends.”

‘We don't want to create those dangers': Mass. State Police use tech to avoid chases

It’s a game-changer for Massachusetts State Police when it comes to fleeing vehicles: Troopers can deploy a GPS tracking device from their cruiser that sticks onto a suspect’s vehicle so it can be tracked rather than chased.

State troopers have been using StarChase technology since last year to tag, track and safely apprehend suspects without engaging in dangerous high-speed pursuits.

Troopers Colton Leary and Robert Beer, with the Massachusetts State Police Driver Training Unit, demonstrated how it works.
