Supreme Court to review case on asylum-seeker processing
The Supreme Court will review a decision made by the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit concerning the "metering" policy, which the Trump administration says hinders border management. The policy involved turning back asylum seekers at ports of entry before they could enter the US. The Ninth Circuit ruled that asylum seekers turned away had "arrived in" the US under federal law.

N.M. program brings women's history to classrooms

The New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program is expanding its impact by developing a K-12 curriculum based on the biographies featured on its roadside markers. Education director Lisa Nordstrum, who first introduced these stories to her seventh-grade students, now leads the effort to incorporate women's histories -- many of whom are absent from textbooks -- into classrooms statewide.

School civics class inspires effort to curb gun violence

Eighth-grader Kamari Goree, inspired by his civics class at Crawford Middle School Leadership Academy, played a hands-on role in community safety efforts following recent gun violence. After being connected with local organizers by his civics teacher, Sara Green, Goree designed and distributed fliers and surveys to neighbors with Green, directly engaging residents in the Centre Parkway area.

Vt. launches Kid Governor program to boost civics
Vermont has introduced the Kid Governor Program this year, a civic education initiative coordinated by the Secretary of State's office. The program enables fifth-graders from across the state, including homeschool groups, to participate in a hands-on election process with students campaigning on issues that matter to them, and the eventual Kid Governor and their cabinet working with state officials to implement their platforms.

Ky. students honor Ruby Bridges with walk to school
Students at McNabb and Morgan elementary schools in Kentucky participated in Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day to commemorate the day in 1960 when Bridges became the first Black student to integrate an all-white school in the South. The event, supported by high-school and middle-school clubs that helped create banners, aimed to teach students about courage, leadership and standing up against injustice.
