Cities adapt as climate change strains N.M. rivers

New Mexico's water systems are increasingly strained as climate change-induced drought affects both the Rio Grande and the Colorado River. The San Juan-Chama Project, designed to alleviate stress on the Rio Grande by diverting water from the Colorado River Basin, has delivered less than a third of its annual allotment this year. Cities such as Santa Fe and Albuquerque are investing in infrastructure to manage the shortages, including Santa Fe's proposed return flow pipeline.

Md. data center project raises environmental concerns
A proposed data center at the former Dickerson coal-fired power facility in Maryland would use water from the Potomac River for cooling, a process that involves returning heated water back into the river, which supplies much of the region's drinking water. Although the project would bring new jobs and economic activity to the area, it is also drawing scrutiny for its potential impact on the river's temperature, which could be harmful for water quality and fish populations.

Invasive species continue to threaten Great Lakes
Invasive species pose a significant environmental threat to the Great Lakes, with at least 188 non-native species documented as of 2023. Ballast water discharged by ships facilitates the spread of these invaders between lakes, yet tensions are growing over ballast water rules in the US and Canada that are designed to prevent the issue. Canada requires all vessels to have treatment systems by 2030, while US rules only apply to new vessels.

Maui officials weigh desalination for water shortages
The Maui County Department of Water Supply in Hawaii has initiated early planning for what could become its first publicly owned desalination project in West Maui. The initiative aims to supplement the region's limited ground and surface water resources, which have been stretched thin especially after the 2023 wildfires. The department recently completed a feasibility study and is now identifying potential sites, with solar power as the preferred energy source.

Texas water district starts $155M pipeline replacement
The Tarrant Regional Water District has started Phase I of the Cedar Creek Section 2 Pipeline Replacement, a $155 million project to replace aging 72-inch prestressed concrete cylinder pipe with 90-inch and 102-inch welded steel pipe. The 11-mile upgrade between Mansfield and Midlothian, Texas, aims to prevent pipe failures and increase capacity, with completion expected in 2028.
