Planning which courses to take next year — and in future years — must be given considerable thought. Students and families should review the Graduation Requirements and Course Planning webpage to make informed decisions while planning for success in high school and beyond.
The curriculum webpage may also be helpful. Refer to our course catalog and course selection webpages.
Mark Your Calendar: Academy Open Houses
FCPS high school academies are holding open houses for interested students. Open houses are a great opportunity to visit classrooms and labs, and meet instructors and academy counselors.
An academy is a center within a high school that offers advanced technical and specialized courses to prepare students for postsecondary education and/or career fields. Academy elective courses provide students with various career experiences, including shadowing, mentoring, or internships with local businesses.
Students can explore more than a dozen career fields through FCPS academies! Watch this video to learn more about academy programs.

POSSE Scholarship Winner!
One of our students, Venus Mejia-Martinez, was recently honored for receiving the POSSE Scholarship at a ceremony at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington D.C.! Venus was one of 60 students selected from over 1,600 applicants in the D.C. area, per comments from POSSE’s D.C. area director at the ceremony. The POSSE Foundation partners with colleges and universities around the country and covers the full cost of tuition to each school. Congratulations on this incredible award, Venus!
Fall 2025 Creative Task Challenge Winner!
Congratulations to 9th grader Rhys Cromwell for securing first place in the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) CS Academy Fall 2025 Creative Task Challenge. A student in Mrs. Cumberbatch’s Computer Science Foundations class, Cromwell rose to the top of a highly competitive field in this worldwide event, which tasks students with designing and programming original digital projects using Python. This prestigious win underscores the strength of our school's computer science program and creativity of Rhys with his design!

Pictured here are Dr. Steriade, Mr. Dent, and Mr. Welch as they presented to students during the curriculum course fair. Students were engaged, enjoyed the presentations, and gained valuable knowledge about course offerings for next year.
