Roadrunner Rundown
January 12, 2026
Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
It was nice to get back into the swing of things with students and staff last week. A place of emphasis as we work with students this year is getting them to articulate what they have discovered or what they wonder related to their learning. “The person who does the talking, does the learning.” Listening is of course critical, then articulating what you heard or sharing your connections helps to cement the learning. I used to ask my kids “What did you do today?”, often they just shared something that didn’t go well but it was also not a representation of their day. I moved to “What did you learn today?”, but often got a short response that provided no insight. I shifted to “In (insert subject) was something challenging or exciting or confusing?” This worked-most days! Each day see how you can get some conversation with your student about how they are learning, what they are learning and why they think this learning is important to do!
There will be no school for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, January 19.
Have a great week.

2026 Yearbook Cover Contest
This week marks the beginning of our annual yearbook cover contest! The winner gets their design on the cover of our yearbook and a free yearbook! Ms. Villanueva and Mr. Woodard have copies of the template and directions, but in the interest of saving paper, I have attached the documents for you to print as needed for whomever is interested. It is important to note that all submissions are due oh January 28 by the end of the day. Please email Ms. Villanueva, cmvillanueva@fcps.edu or Mr. Woodard, rwwoodard@fcps.edu, if you have any questions.
Lost and Found
All items remaining in the Lost and Found as of Friday, January 23 will be donated the following week on Friday, January 30. Please have your child check for missing items. Any items that are labeled will be returned to your student so please mark jackets, hoodies, lunch boxes and water bottles are labeled with at least a “last name”. Thank you.
Upcoming Student Experience Survey
Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between February 23- March 6. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. The electronic opt-out form can also be accessed at this link.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
It’s Time to Brainstorm Project Ideas for STEAM Night!
Calling all Marshall Road students! You are invited to design a tri-fold display that showcases an experiment or a passion connected to the STEAM disciplines. Projects will be proudly displayed at school and celebrated during our annual STEAM Night on Thursday, February 26, featuring exciting hands-on activities with real-world STEAM experts!
Tri-fold boards will be available in the main office, and all students who create a project will be entered into a raffle. Many volunteers will be needed to help with activities so please sign up here to support this inspiring event.

MRES Staff Spotlight
Hooray for Ms. Heflin, our front office Assistant who snagged the PTA Priority Parking Spot this week! Ms. Heflin has been at MRES for 11 years, but her Roadrunner days started even earlier as a parent volunteer for the old Art Smart program. Ms. Heflin’s favorite thing about Marshall Road is connecting with the students, their parents, and of course the MRES staff. Outside of school Ms. Heflin loves to draw and swim for relaxation. She also plays pickleball and American Mah Jongg once or twice a week! Fun fact: Ms. Heflin is half Swiss and half Chinese!
